The Shiroinaga Clan
The Shiroinaga clan was a noble clan in Soul Society that was prominent for at least 1160 years prior to canon.
Founding of the Clan The original clan founder took the family's name not from his own-- but from his Zanpakuto, Shiroinaga. Shiroinaga, being a unique zanpakuto that could be used by shinigami other than it's original owner [Well, limited to blood-relatives only] was passed down through every generation of the family to each clan head. The founder chose to take his swords name rather than his own because it's unique power and nature [again, see the Zanpakuto tab]. The sword was primarily used to dominate enemies and other nobility with it's power, and--up until Serina's father, and eventually her own usage-- it was always raised in anger or senseless bloodshed rather than actual purpose.
Bloody HistoryThe Shiroinaga family was known very much for their violence, and in it's aiding of banishing the Ryodoji clan and a few other enemies of Soul Society. They took many a life, both hollow and not, and made many enemies.

Downfall While the bloodshed of the family had stopped around the time of Serina's father, it did not stop the loathing of their enemies, whom eventually attacked and slew every remaining member aside from her. Since then, the property and manor had fallen into disrepair, and the last member of the clan ended up taking up house in the Kuchiki manor instead (something insisted upon by Sojun Kuchiki, who treated her somewhat like a daughter.)
(Somewhat) Foster Family After joining as the 3rd seat of Squad 6, she had quickly gained her Captain's respect for being the last of her clan (which she did not like) but had gained her lieutenant's respect for her abilities and personal qualities (which she accepted.) After a while, Sojun frequently invited her to the Kuchiki manor once he was informed that she no longer used the Shiroinaga manor which had fallen into disrepair. [No, seriously. sojun is stated to have been a kindperson and not possessing a fighting spirit. I can see him doing this stuff for at least a fellow noble.] She was welcomed into the family at a guest, but of course never took to their name, and although Sojun did express the desire to fully adopt her into the Kuchiki clan, this never happened. She came to respect Sojun on a level of that to her father, and Byakuya was thought of as a brother. Whether they'd admit it or not, Ginrei (only very mildly so) and Byakuya (To the extend of protecting her on a few occasions) did eventually care for Serina as well.
